Not good enough for the Mets, and not good enough for the Phillies.

Luis Castillo was cut by Philadelphia yesterday in what some considered a surprise move. Castillo was expected to open the season as the team’s starting second baseman, with Chase Utley out for the foreseeable future with a knee injury. But Castillo was passed over by another former Met, Wilson Valdez, who is entering his second year with the Phillies.

The Mets cut Castillo, who was in the final season of a four-year contract, on March 19 and he signed with the rival Phillies two days later. He proceeded to show up late to his first day at Phillies camp, drawing some light criticism from manager Charlie Manuel.

“Basically when we brought him in here, that was a short time,” Manuel told the Associated Press. “We’d already gone through spring training, and got to see who we had.
