Charlie Manuel knows exactly what his Phillies will be going up against tomorrow night in Game 1 of the World Series.
Manuel was the manager of the Indians in 2001 and was responsible for having a then 20-year-old CC Sabathia make the team.
“Charlie was great,” said Sabathia, who will start Game 1 of the World Series tomorrow night.
“I owe him everything because at the time when I came up, I was 20-years old, and the front office at the Indians didn’t want to bring a 20-year-old up to the big leagues. And Charlie told me at the beginning of Spring Training if I pitched well enough, he was going to take me. He kept his word.”
Manuel’s faith in the young lefty was rewarded; in his rookie campaign Sabathia went 17-5 with a 4.39 ERA in Cleveland.
