Yoenis Cespedes kept his workout limited Saturday: He did leg exercises.
But the Mets outfielder, two days removed from receiving a cortisone shot for his barking left shoulder, said he still plans to play Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday in Kansas City.
“I thought I probably could have done a lot more today, but I didn’t want to push myself,” Cespedes said. “I want to give myself another day before I really start doing stuff again.”
Cespedes left Game 4 of the NLCS because he couldn’t lift the shoulder and later downplayed the idea that his morning golf game caused the discomfort. Cespedes said he routinely plays golf before a game.
But the fact he didn’t have access to a weight room at Wrigley Field might have caused Cespedes’ injury.
“I don’t usually do push-ups, and those two days we were there, I was doing push-ups because I didn’t have the gym and I couldn’t do other workouts,” Cespedes said.
Juan Uribe took batting practice and is a possibility for the World Series roster, according to manager Terry Collins, but the final decision likely won’t come until Monday. Uribe has missed the past month with a chest injury. Collins said the fact Uribe has two World Series rings can’t be overlooked.
“We’re going to take him [to Kansas City] anyway because he’s been to this dance before,” Collins said. “And I think his presence in the clubhouse and on the bench would be huge.”
Because of weather concerns, the Mets canceled a workout planned for Sunday at Citi Field. The team instead will fly to Kansas City and hold a workout at Kauffman Stadium.
Collins received a phone call from former Dodgers great Don Newcombe, brightening his day.
“I said, ‘Newk, How was the World Series?’ ” Collins said. “And he said, ‘It’s the greatest experience you will ever have in baseball.’
“For one of the greatest pitchers who ever played this game to take a minute at 90 years old to call me and wish me luck, I’m going in pretty excited after that phone call.”
