It only takes two words for Chase Utley to relive Mets hate
Chase Utley’s appeal of a two-game suspension for his takeout slide on Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada will not be heard Monday and likely won’t be heard Tuesday either, The Post has learned.
That would mean the Dodgers’ marked man would be eligible to play Games 3 and 4 of the National League Division Series at Citi Field.
“The Players Association and my agent are handling the appeals process,” Utley said in a statement released Monday afternoon. “I have nothing more to say other than to reiterate that I feel terrible about Ruben’s injury. Now my teammates and I are focused on Game 3 and doing everything we can to win this series.”
Major League Baseball had wanted to expedite the appeal hearing to be conducted Monday afternoon, but Utley’s camp argues it needs more time to prepare its case.
Utley and the players union feel it would be infringement on his right to due process by insisting they put together a grievance argument within 12 hours of the suspension notice. Forcing a hearing Monday could leave the league open for further grievance before a neutral arbitrator about that infringement.
Utley’s defense team is putting together what one person half-jokingly called “a film festival” of similar slides that went unpunished by suspension.
Utley has had good career success against Matt Harvey, and Dodgers manager Don Mattingly indicated Utley could start Game 3 at second base. If so, that would further amplify the fury among the Mets and in the stands at Citi Field. The Mets were incensed about Utley’s leg-breaking slide into Tejada that swung Game 2 in the Dodgers’ favor.
