Christian Yelich revealed that the Brewers were competing for a cause on Monday night.

The Brewers were down 5-3 to the Pirates in the eighth inning, before tying the game on the first career home run by rookie outfielder Garrett Mitchell. In the ninth, they ultimately won on a walk-off homer by Keston Hiura.

Barstool Sports shared a photo of the video board at American Family Field. Included among perfunctory happy birthday and anniversary messages was an unsigned note: “Mark – your friendship means the world to me – let’s not wreck it.”

“Mark down absolutely tremendous,” the main account for Barstool tweeted. “Friend zoned in front of the entire stadium.”

Quote-tweeting this, Yelich wrote, “Down 2 in the 8th inning, the dugout looked up, saw this, and said ‘let’s win one for Mark’. We got you man.”

For his part, Yelich might be starting to heat up at the plate. In the last three games, he is 8-for-15 with two home runs and five RBIs. Yelich won the NL MVP in 2018 and finished second for the award in 2019.

However, late in 2019 he had a freak injury after fouling a ball off his leg, and since then his OPS has been about 300 points lower than it was in his two MVP-caliber years.

The Brewers are 68-59 and 1.5 games behind the Padres for the final Wild Card spot in the National League.
