Christian Yelich’s season is hanging in the balance.
The Brewers star might need season-ending surgery on his lower back, according to The Athletic’s MLB insider Ken Rosenthal.
Yelich, who landed on the injured list Wednesday, will see a back specialist on Thursday to determine his playing future.
“Everybody plays through stuff but sometimes you just can’t,” Yelich said, per MLB.com. “That’s kind of where we’re at at this point. Your body won’t cooperate with you … It’s one of those things that’s held me back a little, so that’s where It’s frustrating.”
Christian Yelich’s season may be over. Kirby Lee-USA TODAY SportsYelich has been perhaps the most valuable player for a surprising Milwaukee team that is 59-43, 6.0 games up in the National League Central entering Wednesday night.
The three-time All-Star currently leads qualified senior circuit hitters in batting average (.315) and on-base percentage (.406), making him a fringe contender for his second career MVP award after winning it with Milwaukee in 2018.
Yelich’s 156 wRC+ is 12th among all qualified hitters.
Despite playing in just 73 games this season, Yelich’s 3.1 FanGraphs wins above replacement (WAR) ranks 21st among qualified position players.
A balky lower back already took Yelich out of action for roughly a month from April to May, and it appears the same issue has cropped up again.
It’s not the first time his back has taken him off the field — Yelich has hit the IL four previous times in his career with the injury, including the stint earlier this season.
Christian Yelich’s injury comes amid one of the best seasons of his career. Getty ImagesThe Brewers, who traded away ace Corbin Burnes over the offseason ahead of what appeared to be a rebuilding season, will now look to hang on to their division lead without their best offensive player.
“For what Yeli does for this lineup and this clubhouse, I don’t know [that] there’s too many players who can replace him. I mean that,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Wednesday, according to Rosenthal. “He’s got a special niche here with us.”
