LOS ANGELES — In addition to their final night of the 2018 season, their second straight World Series loss completed on their home turf, the Dodgers might have witnessed the last start of longtime ace Clayton Kershaw in their uniform.

But if any positive takeaway existed from this sourest of nights, it was this: Kershaw, who suffered the loss as the Dodgers fell to the Red Sox, 5-1, in Game 5 at Dodger Stadium, sounded like a man extremely open to sticking around. So open, in fact, he’s willing to have conversations with his longtime employers before he decides on his future.

Kershaw must act upon the opt-out in his contract by Wednesday; he has two years and $65 million remaining on his deal.

“I haven’t made the decision yet,” he said, after giving up four runs in seven innings. “We have three days to talk, between us and the Dodgers, see what happens. And then we’ll go from there.”

Asked whether he’d be open to talking to the Dodgers during that window of exclusivity — when the possibility of an extension of his deal in return for not opting out would certainly be on the table — Kershaw said, “I think we’ll have some conversations, for sure.”

Kershaw, 30, has been slowed down by injuries the last three years yet still performs at an elite level when healthy. He could accept a lower annual average value for more years and keep himself off the market.

Alex Cora is the fifth first-year manager to win a World Series. The others are Bob Brenly (2001 Diamondbacks), Ralph Houk (1961 Yankees), Eddie Dyer (1946 Cardinals) and Bucky Harris (1924 Senators). Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has lost the World Series twice in two years.

Asked if he will go to the White House if invited, Cora said, “We’ll talk about it later on.’’

The Red Sox went 7-1 away from home during the postseason and are the second team to win seven or more road games in a postseason. The 1996 Yankees went 8-0 outside The Bronx.
