The days of the Yankees being considered locks to retain their own big-money free agents are in the past. And with Robinson Cano appear headed to the open market, the Dodgers again appear ready to spend big this offseason.

The Dodgers and MLB have a tentative agreement that would allow the team to retain $6 billion from their television agreement, according to the Los Angeles Times. Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly would not discuss specific negotiations, but said the potential settlement would allow the team to maintain their record payroll and spending.

Boehly would not talk about specific players, except for his team’s own ace, Clayton Kershaw, who the team is hoping to ink to a long-term extension this offseason. When asked if the team could afford another contract over $200 million, Boehly simply said “yes.”

Cano will likely fall into that pricey category. The Yankees, according to Hal Steinbrenner, have had several talks with Cano’s new representatives at CAA.

“We’ve had several conversations with Brodie (Van Wagenen), the new agent, just as we did with Scott (Boras),” Steinbrenner said in mid-May. “A lot of it’s procedural. I keep saying, it’s not a process we’ll be reading about in the paper every day. If anything significant happens, everybody’s going to know, but we’re going to continue in the weeks to come to work though things and try to come to an agreement.”
