Jeff Conine is 2-for-2 in his career when it comes to the postseason, and isn’t in a hurry to see that streak end.

The first baseman/outfielder, acquired by the Mets in a waiver deal Monday with the Reds, won championships with the Marlins in 1997 and 2003, the only times in his 17-year major league career that he’s reached the postseason.

“I don’t want to mess that [streak] up,” he said, acknowledging the Mets’ chances of making the playoffs.

Conine did not play in the Mets’ 7-6 victory over the Padres last night, but was available to pinch hit.

He’ll need no introductory period. Conine’s former Marlins teammates included Carlos Delgado, Paul Lo Duca, Luis Castillo, Guillermo Mota and Moises Alou.

Though Conine can play the outfield, he figures to see most of his action pinch-hitting and backing up Delgado at first base.

Regardless, it’s last call for the 41-year-old Conine: He says he’ll retire at the season’s conclusion.

“It would be a great way to go out,” Conine said, referring to a championship.

To make room for Conine, the Mets optioned infielder Anderson Hernandez to Triple-A New Orleans.

Willie Randolph called the latest reports on Pedro Martinez “very positive, very encouraging.” Martinez allowed two unearned runs on two hits over five innings for Single-A St. Lucie on Monday in his third rehab start.

“You like what you’re hearing, and I can’t wait to see him,” Randolph said. “It’s getting close. Everyone I spoke to [Monday] night was very encouraged and excited about how he looked.”

Martinez’s next rehab start will come Sunday. One possibility is Martinez will pitch for Single-A Brooklyn.

Endy Chavez was 2-for-4 with two singles in a rehab start last night for Single-A St. Lucie . . . Jose Valentin (fractured right tibia) is still hopeful of a return this season.

Valentin, who remains on crutches, was in the Mets’ clubhouse yesterday and said he’ll be evaluated on Aug. 30. If he’s cleared to begin workouts, he’ll shoot for a mid-September return.
