A prison inmate in the Dominican Republic may have helped plan the assassination attempt on baseball legend David Ortiz, according to a new report.
Authorities are questioning José Eduardo Ciprian Lebrón about Sunday’s attack on Ortiz — in which a gunman ambushed the former Red Sox slugger in a bar and shot him in the back — and are investigating him as one of the planners, sources tell the Boston Globe.
Another inmate, Carlos Rafael Álvarez, is also being grilled about the shooting, the man’s lawyer tells the paper.
Attorney Bella Brea said cops told her they have evidence her client — who is serving a 20-year prison stint for robbery — spoke at some point with the suspects who’ve already been arrested in connection with Ortiz’s shooting, according to the Globe.
Neither man has been charged in the botched hit job on Ortiz, who survived the shooting and was flown to a Boston hospital.
Local authorities announced Wednesday that six people are in custody over the shooting — including the accused gunman. Police allege the ringleader was paid $8,000 to arrange the attack but haven’t offered a motive.
