Jerry Manuel is promising a big shakeup after watching the Mets fall two games below .500 on Tuesday with a humiliating, 11-0 loss to the worst-in-baseball Mariners at Shea Stadium. We’re not really sure what’s at Manual’s disposal to radically change, but he says they’re coming. Speaking of Manuel, he and Carlos Beltran were both tossed by home-plate umpire Brian Runge in the fourth inning. Replays appeared to show Runge bumped Manuel, too. The fallout should be interesting.
Colleague Larry Brooks, meanwhile, writes that the addition of Manuel hasn’t made any difference in the Mets’ pitiful hitting.
Here is a closer look at Mariners knuckleballer R.A. Dickey, a struggling journeyman who somehow completely stifled the Mets on Tuesday.
In the notebook, Ryan Church is eyeing the Subway Series for his return from the DL. We also have items on the resting of David Wright, Manuel’s bullpen plan and first-round pick Ike Davis.
And lastly, Hank Steinbrenner says that Willie Randolph is welcome back with the Yankees. Baby Boss also gets in a dig at the Mets for their bungled firing of Randolph.
