It’s a little league home run in the pros.

Oakland A’s outfielder Cristian Pache turned what could have been a routine ground ball – and at worst should have been a single – into a three-run homer after a defensive meltdown in the Rays outfield.

Pache hit a grounder between second base and where shortstop Wander Franco was playing, which went just past the rookie’s reach. But as it rolled into the outfield gap, Rays left fielder Randy Arozarena appeared to overrun the ball, and tried to slide to field it.

The decision backfired tremendously. Arozarena appeared to kick the ball past center fielder Kevin Kiermaier, who had to double back and chase after it. When he managed to catch up to the ball – which rolled all the way to the wall – he, too, bobbled it as he tried to throw it back into the infield.

By the time he managed to get a clean hold of the baseball, not only had the two runners on base scored, but Pache was rounding third and headed home. The throw to the plate was not in time – and the end result was a three-run home run. 3-0, Athletics.

Of course, it was not scored that way. Arozarena was charged with an error, and Pache was given a single.

Arozarena did manage to hit a double his next time to the plate, and later scored to cut the lead to 3-1. A’s catcher Sean Murphy doubled in a run in the fourth to increase Oakland’s lead to 4-1.
