The Cubs are so confident in their current team, they didn’t feel the need to wait for the playoffs to bring back the mastermind behind all the success.

The team signed President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein to a five-year contract extension Wednesday reportedly worth more than $50 million. Epstein is in the final year of the five-year, $18.5 million deal he signed with the Cubs in 2011. He previously spent eight years with the Red Sox as their general manager, winning two World Series titles, in 2004 and 2007.

The new deal makes Epstein the highest-paid front office executive in the MLB. The Dodgers previously set the record in October 2014, when they signed Andrew Friedman to a five-year, $35 million contract to make him their team president.

Epstein oversees a team that has the best record in baseball in 2016 and has hope of breaking the longest World Series drought in baseball history. The Cubs last claimed the title in 1908.

Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer and director of scouting and player development Jason McLeod also were expected to sign contract extensions Wednesday.
