Johnny Damon was a Yankees teammate when Alex Rodriguez hit 54 home runs with 156 RBIs in 2007.

Damon, now with the Tigers, says current teammate Miguel Cabrera is better than that.

Asked by the Detroit Free Press if Cabrera ranks among the best he has played with, Damon replied, “No. He’s in a class by himself.”

Damon, who was with the Red Sox when David Ortiz hit 47 homers with 148 RBIs in 2005, said only Cardinals star Albert Pujols compares to Cabrera.

“I haven’t got to see Pujols play too often, but what (Miguel is) doing, especially in this ballpark … this ballpark could be the only thing that keeps him from winning the Triple Crown,” Damon said of Detroit’s Comerica Park. “He’s that good. The thing is, he still has a chance to be that Triple Crown candidate.”

Cabrera, 27, leads the American League with 19 homers and 56 RBIs, and is seventh with a .330 batting average.

Rodriguez, 32 in 2007, batted .314; Ortiz, 30 in 2005, hit .300, both outside the top 10 in the American League.
