Johnny Damon has struggled in the postseason before and bounced back with incredible success — just ask the Yankees.
Damon was 3-for-29 in the first six games of the 2004 ALCS when he was with the Red Sox against the Bombers. Game 7 was a different story. Damon hit a second-inning grand slam that pushed the lead from 2-0 to 6-0 and put the finishing touches on the reeling Yankees, who led the series 3-0.
Now the Yankees will be hoping for a similar turnaround from Damon, who went 1-for-13 in the team’s three-game sweep of the Twins in the ALDS.
“That’s why I am not going to beat myself up over what happened in Game 3,” said Damon, referring to his 2004 breakout. “My teammates picked me up (in Minnesota) and got us a big win and here we are.”
Damon did come to the Stadium yesterday, on the team’s off day, to get some extra swings.
“I actually felt pretty decent the first couple of games,” Damon said. “But obviously against (Carl) Pavano, I just wasn’t seeing the ball well at all. I think my head had been moving a bit too much and I just wanted to come in and get some piece of mind and make sure I’d be ready to go Friday night.”
