For the first time in nearly two years, Deivi Garcia was back with the Yankees on Wednesday.

And like most of his other promotions, it only lasted a day.

The former top prospect was called up on Wednesday for his sixth stint in the major leagues — this one his first as a reliever — and he recorded a three-inning save in an 11-3 win over the Athletics before being optioned back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

“It was a big pick-me-up,” manager Aaron Boone said. “To be able to have him finish that game and give us three innings was big. It wasn’t perfect, but he made some pitches, especially when he got in some three-ball counts so the walk didn’t hurt him.”

Garcia gave up two hits, including a solo home run, and one walk while striking out two and throwing 55 pitches.

More importantly, he allowed Boone to stay away from other relievers heading into an important four-game series against the Rays.

The Yankees will call up a fresh arm on Thursday, potentially Randy Vasquez, to give them length or a reliever who is not on the 40-man roster.

Nick Ramirez and Greg Weissert are not eligible to be recalled this soon after being optioned unless they are replacing an injured pitcher.

Before replacing Weissert in the Yankees bullpen on Wednesday, the 23-year-old Garcia had recorded a 4.50 ERA with 16 walks across 10 appearances and 20 innings this season for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

After a rough 2022 in which he accrued a 6.89 ERA and spent the whole season in the minor leagues, Garcia has made the transition to a full-time reliever who can offer length in the bullpen, which is what the Yankees needed Wednesday.

“[Relieving is] probably the best avenue for him to be successful,” Boone said before the series finale against the Athletics. “I think there’s a chance he could thrive in this role and that’s what we’re hoping to see in making this transition.”

Garcia, who last pitched for the Yankees on May 29, 2021, is in his final season of having minor league options.

Luis Severino (strained lat) made his first rehab start on Wednesday morning with SWB, throwing 3 ¹/₃ innings while building his pitch count up to 49.

He gave up a solo home run, walked one and struck out three, while his fastball averaged 95.9 mph and topped out at 98.

“I watched a good bit of it,” Boone said. “I actually thought he looked really, really good.”

Severino is scheduled to make another rehab start on Tuesday, after which the Yankees will re-evaluate his plan.

After being pulled from Tuesday’s game with a tight hip, Aaron Hicks came in Wednesday feeling better and was an emergency option off the bench.

It appears he will be able to avoid the injured list, giving him a chance to build on the progress he had made over the last few games.
