Carlos Delgado thinks that Willie Randolph’s contract extension is much deserved.

“Willie had a lot to do with the fantastic year we had,” said Delgado, who spoke yesterday on a conference call to promote Tuesday night’s Thurman Munson Awards, which will be held at the Marriott Marquis.

Delgado reiterated the birth of his first child could cause him to miss the Mets’ season opener because his wife is due on April 1.

Curtis Martin, another Munson Award winner, also was on the conference call and indicated that he will officially announce his retirement sometime after the Super Bowl.
