Part of the Mets’ 2007 opening week may have Julio Franco playing first base.
According to an Associated Press report, Carlos Delgado may have to skip several games in early April because he and his wife, Betzaida, are expected to have a baby around April 1 (the Mets open the season against the Cardinals in St. Louis that night).
The story said the 34-year-old first baseman told El Nuevo Dia, “My child comes first.”
“We’re aware that his wife is having a baby and whatever he needs to do to take care of the family, that’s what he’ll do,” Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said. “It’s always been the Mets’ policy when one of our players has a baby, no matter what time of the year it is, he’s always permitted to spend time with his wife and new baby.”
