No. 2 won’t be there to celebrate perhaps the No. 1 Yankees team of all time.
Derek Jeter will not be in attendance for the Yankee Stadium party on Aug. 18 to honor the 20th anniversary of the 1998 Yankees, who won the World Series and finished the season and playoffs with a combined 125-50 ledger, the most wins ever. The Saturday event will precede a matchup with the Blue Jays.
The former captain instead plans to send a video tribute to the fans.
Jeter has avoided setting foot in Yankee Stadium since becoming Marlins CEO. Before beginning the next chapter of his life, Jeter had been present at his own jersey retirement, as well as ceremonies for Jorge Posada and Bernie Williams.
Orlando “El Duque’’ Hernandez also won’t attend. Up until this past winter when Kevin Reese took over the player development department from Gary Denbo, El Duque worked in the Yankees’ minor leagues. He now works for ESPN.
World Series MVP Scott Brosius, the Mariners’ third base coach, and Joe Girardi aren’t on the list of those attending. Chili Davis, the Cubs’ hitting coach, also is unlikely to attend.
Fan favorites David Cone, Tino Martinez, Paul O’Neill, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, David Wells and Williams do plan to attend. So do Joe Torre, coaches Chris Chambliss, Willie Randolph and Jose Cardenal, and coach Don Zimmer’s widow, Soot.
