Derek Jeter found himself on many a Post back page in his time as a Yankees icon. The one from Nov. 30, 2012, however, seems to have stuck in his memory.

The headline “Derek Eater,” coupled with a picture of a post-ankle-surgery Jeter in a boot, looking perhaps a little portly, and a read-out: “Rehabbing Jeter takes fork in the road to recovery.”

The Captain still gets asked about it almost a full decade later, as evidenced by his appearance on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” podcast on Wednesday.

“You talk about trust, right? After that came out, I was actually in Miami at a hotel,” Jeter recalled of the legendary headline. “Afterwards, I went up to a couple of friends, I was like ‘Why you guys didn’t tell me? Did I gain weight or something?'”

The story behind the photo was one Jeter lamented not getting into “The Captain” documentary.

“I had met with a good friend of mine who’s on one of the networks,” he said. “The next day I ran into him at the airport, he took a picture with me — at the time, I had actually lost weight from when I played.

“I don’t want to get on any New York papers, I don’t, because if you get on them, they’ll come after you. I did not gain weight. A lot of people thought it was funny, I did not at the time. I was like, ‘What’s going on, man?'”

It quickly led to some interesting — and ill-timed — fan interactions

“I was downstairs at the hotel restaurant and I had a huge breakfast,” Jeter said, “and somebody came over and  — you know how you see someone sorta looking at you — and they had a paper in their hand and they’re looking at me and they’re looking at my plate, and then I saw what was on the front page.”

Whatever Jeter felt about the headline in the moment, he quickly laughed it off.

“I thought it was pretty funny,” Jeter told ESPN in December 2012. “I guess there’s a lot of things you can do with a picture. The funny thing is we were just talking about, before then, the day or two before then, people were telling me I lost a lot of weight, and then two days later I’m on the front page of the New York Post. They had a little fun with it. But it’s over and done with.”
