After losing out to the Yankees in the Gerrit Cole sweepstakes, the Dodgers are looking elsewhere to make a big splash.

While they’re pursuing a Francisco Lindor trade with the Indians, Los Angeles has also had “exploratory trade talks” with the Red Sox about a possible Mookie Betts deal, according to USA Today.

Boston is trying to get under the luxury-tax threshold, and because the 27-year-old Betts can become a free agent after the 2020 season and is intent on testing the market, new chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom could try to trade the 2018 AL MVP.

Betts slashed an incredible .346/.438/.640 and put up a 30-30 season en route to the MVP, and he followed that up in 2019 by slashing .295/.391/.524 with 29 homers, 40 doubles and 97 walks against 101 strikeouts. The right fielder has won a Gold Glove and been named an All-Star in each of the past four seasons.

The Dodgers have been one of baseball’s best teams in recent years, making the playoffs seven consecutive seasons, but they’re still in search of their first World Series title since 1988. They lost in the World Series in 2017 and 2018 before falling this year in the NLDS to the Nationals, who eventually won it all.

Cole opted for the Yankees’ nine-year, $324 million contract offer instead of staying home in Southern California.
