LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Hell no, he won’t go.
Devin Mesoraco was among the Mets players reassigned to minor league camp Saturday, but the veteran catcher has informed team brass that he won’t report and wants to be released to pursue other potential big-league opportunities.
According to industry source, Mesoraco — who last month returned to the team on a minor-league deal — would rather retire than play for Triple-A Syracuse. Mesoraco, according to the source, was under the impression he would be added to the major league roster by the end of camp.
Mesoraco’s reassignment by the club came a day after he went unclaimed by every team, which had an opportunity to add him to the 25-man roster after the catcher had exercised the upward-mobility clause in his contract.
Mesoraco caught 21 of Jacob deGrom’s starts last season, when the pitcher won the National League Cy Young Award with a 1.70 ERA.
DeGrom said he spoke to Mesoraco after receiving the news.
“I threw the ball really well to him and he is going to be missed, great guy and I wish him the best,” deGrom said. “I said, ‘I like throwing to you. I felt like what we were able to do last year was pretty special.’ He caught most of those innings. I told him that.”
With Mesoraco removed from the mix, the Mets have to decide between starting the season with Travis d’Arnaud as the backup catcher or placing him on the injured list, which would give the job to Tomas Nido.
On Saturday, Nido was behind the plate to catch deGrom for the first time in his career. DeGrom fired three perfect innings in the Mets’ 12-2 exhibition victory over the Braves.
The Mets also reassigned Adeiny Hechavarria, Rajai Davis, Carlos Gomez, Hector Santiago and Ryan O’Rourke to minor league camp Saturday.
Those cuts leave Luis Avilan and Rule 5 pick Kyle Dowdy in line to claim openings in the bullpen, but an industry source said the Mets will be monitoring the waiver wire for pitchers and could sign an established arm that becomes available.
