Without several outstanding defensive plays in the ALDS, the Yankees likely wouldn’t have won Game 3 and finished a sweep of the Twins.
While DJ LeMahieu at first base provides the Yankees with their best infield defense, Aaron Boone isn’t going to shy away from using Edwin Encarnacion if he wants to move LeMahieu to third base.
“I’d be comfortable with Edwin at first. I feel like he’s healthy and sound, feel like he plays a pretty good first base, so yeah, I would always be comfortable going that way if there was the right situation,’’ Boone said before his club worked out at Yankee Stadium on Thursday.
Encarnacion started a dozen games at first base and was the DH in 32 regular-season games as a Yankee and in all three ALDS tilts.
The last time Encarnacion started a game at first base was Sept. 9 against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Edwin EncarnacionAnthony J. CausiOne scenario would see Boone moving LeMahieu to third in place of Gio Urshela and then using Urshela at third in the late innings to protect a lead and send LeMahieu to first base.
Zack Britton said there are no issues with the right foot he jammed covering first base in Game 3 of the ALDS in which he left for precautionary reasons Monday night.
“[Wednesday] I felt fine. Boone said if we had a game [Wednesday] I would have been fine. The layoff has been good,’’ said Britton who participated in fielding drills Wednesday and Thursday.
Britton had Achilles’ tendon surgery after the 2017 season on his right foot so he was asked if issues in the area remain a concern.
“The doctor did my surgery told me til I was two years out of surgery you might feel some stuff near the ankle. Hopefully next year all this stuff will be behind me,” he said. because there’s still some things — surprisingly — that I haven’t done. Covering first, running full speed and hitting the bag at a weird angle, that’s not something I do all the time,’’ Britton said.
