The Mets will return from the All-Star break without Dominic Smith.
The first baseman/left fielder was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Sunday, with a right ankle sprain, the team announced Thursday. Smith rolled his ankle running the bases against the Cubs on Saturday.
The Mets did not immediately announce a corresponding move, though Nick Plummer and Khalil Lee are lefty bats who have been summoned from Triple-A Syracuse this season. The Mets’ second half begins Friday at Citi Field against Padres righty Yu Darvish, so a replacement lefty bat may be inserted into the lineup right away.
The IL stint is yet another blow for Smith, who has yet to homer in 152 plate appearances and carries a .560 OPS this season. The plan entering the year was to platoon Smith and J.D. Davis at designated hitter, but neither has taken off, and the Mets likely will be in the market for a slugger at the trade deadline.
