Drew Robinson’s second act is nothing short of inspiring.

The River Cats outfielder hit a solo homer in Sacramento’s 10-7 loss to the Las Vegas Aviators on Tuesday — 13 months after he attempted suicide, resulting in the loss of his right eye by a gunshot wound. His third game back in the pros — which took place in his hometown of Las Vegas — also included a double.

The second inning homer, though, was like no other for Robinson, a former big-leaguer playing with the Giants’ Triple-A squad. It was his first home run in his pro comeback since the suicide attempt.

“Chills,” he wrote on Twitter Wednesday. “Tears of every emotion in the book while rounding the bases.”

In April 2020, Robinson put a gun to his right temple and pulled the trigger. When he woke up 20 hours later and realized he was still alive, Robinson called 911 to save his own life. He detailed his experience with depression to ESPN.

Robinson, who played a total of 100 games for the Rangers and Cardinals from 2017 through 2019, underwent four surgeries to rebuild his head and eye socket and lost 30 pounds and most of his muscle, he shared with the outlet.

Now, the 29-year-old plays with a prosthetic eye in his right socket. He also lost parts of his senses of taste and smell in the incident.

On May 5, Robinson celebrated signing with the Opening Day roster for the River Cats, the San Francisco Giants’ Class AAA affiliate.

“I’m officially a one-eyed professional baseball player,” he wrote on Twitter. “This is so much bigger than me. I’m excited, nervous, empowered and more importantly, ready for a magical experience.”

As Robinson continues to make waves in the minors, his goal is to eventually reach the majors again.
