Shelley Duncan has a roster spot. Yesterday he made a case for at least being the right-handed part of the first base platoon. By GEORGE A. KING III

Shelley Duncan doesn’t have to fear about getting a roster spot at the end of spring training. His right-handed power is hard to find and his enthusiasm is catching. However, Duncan opened a bid for extended playing time yesterday in Clearwater where he hit a three-run homer in the first and doubled in two runs in the fourth against the Phillies.

Duncan is raw but improving at first and could compliment Jason Giambi at first if he shows he can attack left-handed hurlers.
