Both the Charleston RiverDogs (Yankees) and Savannah Sand Gnats (Mets) have had four players selected to play in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game, which will take place June 23 in West Virginia. Charleston will be represented by outfielders Melky Mesa and Dan Brewer and pitchers Hector Noesi and Pat Venditte, while Savannah will be represented by second baseman Josh Satin, outfielder Sean Ratliff and pitchers Jeffrey Kaplan and Jimmy Johnson. Venditte burst onto the scene last year as a 20th round selection out of Creighton because of his ability to pitch with both his left and right hand. That said, he’s proved over the past year that he’s no fluke. He is 2-1 with a 0.71 ERA, and is tied for the minor league lead with 18 saves.
Noesi, a 22-year-old from the Dominican Republic, is 2-2 with a 2.42 ERA, striking out 57 in 52 innings.
Another 22-year-old from the D.R., Mesa is tied for the league lead with 12 home runs. He is hitting .262, 12 homers and 33 RBI.
Brewer, an eighth-round pick in last year’s draft, is third in the SAL with a .327 average. The 21-year-old Bradley product also has two homers and 19 RBI.
Satin was a Baseball America All-American last spring before the Mets selected him in the sixth round out of Cal. Satin, who is 6-foot-2 and 24 years old, is hitting .316 with two homers, 31 RBI and 25 runs scored.
Ratliff, a fourth round pick in last year’s draft out of Stanford, is hitting .309 with five homers and 31 RBI.
Kaplan is 4-2 with a 1.46 ERA for Savannah, striking out 47 and walking 17 in 55.2 innings. The 11th round pick in last year’s draft was called up to High-A St. Lucie over the weekend, and he’ll make his debut there tonight against the Dunedin Blue Jays.
Finally, Johnson is 1-0 with a 0.68 ERA in 19 games for Savannah. The 23-year-old left-hander was selected by the Mets in the 28th round of last year’s draft, and has struck out 28 in 26.1 innings. He also was called up to St. Lucie last week, though he’s yet to pitch there.
