Sweet Lou is hanging ’em up.
Cubs manager and former Yankees outfielder and skipper Lou Piniella announced yesterday that he will retire at the end of the season, ending a storied career as a player and manager that has included three World Series rings and some of the most memorable on-field tantrums in history.
Piniella, who turns 67 on Aug. 28, is in his 23rd season as a manager, his fourth with the Cubs, after stints with the Yankees, Reds, Mariners and Devil Rays. He led the Reds to a surprise sweep of the heavily favored A’s in the 1990 World Series, won three Manager of the Year awards and will retire as the 14th-winningest manager in history, trailing only Tony La Russa, Bobby Cox and Joe Torre among active managers.
