COVID-19 hit the Mets on Thursday as a player and staff member tested positive, forcing the Mets-Marlins game and the Subway Series over the weekend to be postponed. On an updated version of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with me and Nelson Figueroa, we dive into what this means for the Mets moving forward.
We open the podcast getting into wild things always happening down in Miami and in Florida. We discuss the postponed games and what it means for the Mets rotation and what it means for the Yankees, who were coming into the series getting swept by the Rays. Does the time not playing, assuming there are no more positive cases, benefit the Mets at all? We examine what the schedule could look like in the coming week to try and make these games up. The logical move seems to be to have a doubleheader at Citi Field Monday between the Mets and Yankees and then a doubleheader Thursday in Queens to finish up the Mets-Marlins series that is scheduled to start Tuesday.
Figgie and I examine Seth Lugo’s move to the starting rotation and Steven Matz’s demotion to the bullpen. Can this move benefit Matz? As a guy that moved from the rotation to the bullpen himself, Figgie breaks down what the difference is. We look at the importance of the Mets potentially getting Michael Wacha back this week and when we could see David Peterson back on the mound from his shoulder injury. We bring up Oliver Perez and how he transformed himself into a really good reliever and still is pitching well out of the bullpen. Figgie tells a story of catching him when he first came to the Pirates and how he impressed him and the team with his electric stuff. Can Matz re-invent himself as a reliever?

Then 2000 Mets starting pitcher Glendon Rusch joins the show. We take a trip down memory lane to the 2000 Subway Series World Series and how the city was electric with fans excited from both sides. Rusch looks back to the series, Bobby Valentine’s message to the team going into it, why he enjoyed playing the Yankees, the memorable Roger Clemens game and the two-stadium doubleheader. Rusch also talks about his 2002 season where he was one of the best hitting pitchers in the game.
