The Yankees were losers of six of nine games entering Saturday’s game in St. Petersburg, Fla., and Joe Girardi’s anger boiled over.

The Yankees manager got tossed in the fifth inning against the Rays for arguing balls and strikes, shortly after pitching Larry Rothschild was ejected for the same. Girardi pulled his best Billy Martin act, bending over and dusting dirt onto home plate.

The drama was only just beginning. In the sixth inning, Rays pitcher Matt Andriese hit Aaron Judge in the left ribcage, getting himself tossed. Judge, who had homered earlier in the game, calmly walked to first and later scored to pull the Yankees within 9-5.

Yankees reliever Tommy Layne had hit Tampa Bay outfielder Corey Dickerson the previous inning.
