Robinson Cano’s fresh start turned out more like a rotten continuation.

Making his debut Sunday for the San Diego Padres, Cano went 0-for-5 with four runners left on base and couldn’t save teammate Will Myers from a throwing error that plated a run for the Braves. The Padres still beat Atlanta, 7-3, in 11 innings.

The Mets cut Cano earlier this month despite owing him nearly $45 million. After returning from his season-long suspension for a second failed PEDs test in 2021, Cano hit well in spring training and on Opening Day, but things went south from there as he owned a .195 batting average with a home run and three RBIs in 43 plate appearances at the time of his departure.

The 39-year-old former Yankees slugger joined the Padres this weekend to be a left-handed bat off the bench. He was not used in the Friday or Saturday games before getting a start at second base and hitting eighth in the lineup.

Cano made the first out on a grounder with a runner in scoring position to start the 10th and the second out – after the Padres struck for four runs – on a fly ball to the warning track with a runner on first base in the 11th.

The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Adam Duvall singled into right field.

Myers’ lackadaisical throw back to the infield couldn’t be corralled by Cano, who hurried after the ball as it rolled away. Cano’s throw to the plate was not in time to get Dansby Swanson, who initially stopped at third base before seeing the opportunity to score.

A forgettable debut other than the win.
