Newly acquired Pittsburgh pitcher A.J. Burnett is expected to miss two to three months while recovering from surgery for a facial fracture, forcing the Pirates to rearrange their plans for opening day.
The Pirates had hoped Burnett would be able to start April 5 in the opener at home against Philadelphia. Pittsburgh got the 35-year-old righty on Feb. 19 from the Yankees in a trade for two minor leaguers and cash.
Burnett had surgery yesterday in Pittsburgh for a broken orbital bone near his right eye. He was injured when he fouled a ball off his face Wednesday during a bunting drill.
The Pirates said the injury didn’t affect Burnett’s vision and that there was no impingement to the muscles and nerves around his eye.
MARINERS: Former Yankees catcher Jesus Montero was hit in the mask by a foul ball and left his first exhibition game for Seattle.
Montero homered in the top of the fifth inning against Oakland, but the star prospect was hit by a foul ball off the bat of Josh Donaldson in the bottom of the fifth.
Montero looked dazed and had to be guided from the field. The 22-year-old Venezuelan was Seattle’s prize acquisition in the offseason. Manager Eric Wedge said Montero is “OK.”
RANGERS: Texas newcomer Yu Darvish struck out Elvis Andrus and pitched a hitless inning in an intrasquad game.
RED SOX: Manager Bobby Valentine is giving David Ortiz an early look at first base.
ATHLETICS: Manny Ramirez had a quiet debut for Oakland, seeing only three pitches in two at-bats in an exhibition loss to Seattle — Ramirez’s first game in nearly a year. He grounded into a double play and bounced out.
ARRESTS: Former Yankees pitching prospect Brien Taylor, the overall No. 1 selection in the 1991 draft, is facing multiple drug charges after an arrest in North Carolina. A statement said undercover narcotics agents bought a large quantity of cocaine and crack cocaine from the 40-year-old Taylor over several months. He remains jailed under $275,000 bond.
