(UPDATED) The Mets showed just how thin their system is today by sending struggling young outfielder Fernando Martinez back to Triple-A Buffalo and calling up the even-more-struggling Nick Evans to take his place on the roster. Martinez, who was the youngest active player in the majors at age 20, hit just .194 with a .286 on-base percentage in 18 games with the Mets this season.

Evans was promoted from Double-A Binghamton but has had even worse problems of his own this season.

The young outfielder/first baseman was demoted all the way to extended spring training in Florida last month after hitting .093 with Buffalo. The Mets even had Evans consult a sports psychologist at the time to find the root of his problems.

After the stint in extended spring, Evans was sent to Binghamton and was hitting just .276 in his first 25 games with the B-Mets at the time of the surprise big-league call up.

In other roster moves, the Mets claimed left-handed reliever Arturo Lopez off waivers from the Padres and moved infielder Ramon Martinez (finger surgery) to the 60-day disabled list.

Lopez, who had a 19.29 ERA in four relief appearances with San Diego this season, was immediately assigned to Buffalo.
