CHICAGO — Jeurys Familia stretched a tightrope over Lake Michigan, with no netting below, and somehow strolled across without touching water Tuesday night.

In his most dramatic recovery of the season, considering the situation and venue, the Mets closer escaped a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the ninth inning at Wrigley Field to secure a heart-stopping 2-1 victory over the Cubs.

“I just always try to calm down when I have a situation like that,” Familia said after getting Kris Bryant to hit into a game-ending double play. “I try to throw my sinker down, make sure they make contact for a ground ball and believe in myself.”

Familia had pulled a similar Houdini act at Citi Field against the Cubs on June 30, when he put runners on second and third with nobody out — before loading the bases with one out — in the ninth and got the final outs without a run scoring to preserve a 4-3 victory.

This time, after Rene Rivera’s RBI single in the top of the inning had snapped a 1-1 tie, Familia entered and walked Addison Russell and Miguel Montero in succession before Javier Baez’s bunt single — a ball Jose Reyes probably should have let roll, as it was headed toward foul territory — loaded the bases. But Familia recovered to get Matt Szczur to hit into a fielder’s choice, with James Loney firing home, before Bryant’s double play, started by Reyes, ended it.

“[Familia] is a special guy,” manager Terry Collins said. “That’s why I think he is as good as there is in baseball.”

Familia’s save was his 33rd in as many chances this season and came after Jerry Blevins and Hansel Robles had combined for 2 ¹/₃ scoreless innings behind Noah Syndergaard.

“I knew Familia was going to do it, I know he’s been there before,” Rivera said. “I know what Familia can do, and after the first couple of at-bats I went out there and gave support and said, ‘Hey, we can do this. Go back to the strike zone and you’re going to have all the ground balls,’ and that’s what he did.”

After leaving his previous start early with “dead arm,” Syndergaard gave the Mets a chance by allowing one unearned run on seven hits over 5 ²/₃ innings with eight strikeouts and two walks. Blevins replaced Syndergaard (105 pitches) in the sixth and retired Montero with the go-ahead run at second base.

The Mets received a full dose of Jake Arrieta, who lasted seven innings and allowed one earned run on five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Reyes’ speed got the Mets a run in the sixth that tied it 1-1. Reyes hit a shot into the right-field corner and went full throttle from the batter’s box to third, barely beating the relay throw to third for a leadoff triple. Curtis Granderson followed with a fly to medium center that allowed Reyes to waltz home.

The Mets won a replay challenge in the fourth, after Arrieta was ruled safe at the plate attempting to score on Tommy La Stella’s single to right. But, upon further review, Rivera snagged Michael Conforto’s strong throw and applied the tag before Arrieta reached home, ending the inning.

It was Rivera’s throwing error in the third that gave the Cubs an unearned run. Wilson Contreras broke toward third on a ball in the dirt — ruled a wild pitch — and Rivera’s throw sailed 10 feet wide of Reyes on the bag, allowing the runner to score easily.

Syndergaard survived two defensive miscues in the first inning without a run scoring. Granderson, starting in center field for the first time this season, got a late jump on La Stella’s line drive that landed for a single and Bryant’s ensuing grounder hit off Neil Walker’s backhand for a single. Unfazed, Syndergaard recorded three straight outs.

“You knew this was going to be a low-scoring game,” Rivera said. “And you just try to take advantage of all the opportunities you can get, and we did.”
