Here are five things that need to occur for the Yankees to win the World Series.

1. Have everything go right from Opening Day until late October and that might not be enough.

The Yankees haven’t played in a postseason series since 2012 and just one wild-card game, which they lost to the Astros. They can win the balanced AL East, but that’s not the way to bet it.

2. Believe in the Fountain of Youth.

Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and Carlos Beltran combine for 100 homers and 270 RBIs. That has to be augmented by career years from Chase Headley and Brian McCann.

3. Score a lot.

Michael Pineda is the No. 2 starter and he has never had the responsibility of pitching toward the front of the rotation. He is injury prone and has too many highs and lows. The rotation was the biggest question going into spring training and nothing has changed on Opening Day. The five starters have to stay healthy, make a combined 135 starts and pray very hard the Yankees lead the league in runs scored by a wide margin.

4. The Royals and Blue Jays are struck with a hard luck and injuries.

The Royals are the best team in baseball. The Blue Jays are the best team in the AL East. The Red Sox are a mess, so that helps in the East, but the Rangers are solid and the Mariners have the pieces to contend. The Astros have more postseason experience in the last three years than the Yankees.

5. Make a blockbuster deal at the deadline.

The Yankees will hang around in the AL East long enough to steal it, but the rotation must be upgraded with something better than Pineda. If that means sacrificing Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge, so be it. The Yankees stood idle at the deadline last year when they were six games ahead in the East and watched the Blue Jays blow by them and finish six games ahead.
