John Maine signed with the Rockies, but there is a chance he may not start the season with the organization.

According to ESPN, Maine’s contract will pay him $3 million if he makes the major-league team. But if he is not on the roster by “early in the regular season” there is an out clause.

Maine showed promise early in his Mets career after they acquired him from the Orioles for Kris Benson before the 2006 season. He went 15-10 with a 3.91 ERA in 2007, his first full-year with the team, but shoulder injuries limited his potential.

Maine’s final start for the Mets came on May 20 last season when he walked the leadoff batter, struggled loosening up, and had a clubhouse disagreement with manger Jerry Manuel.

Maine, who finished 1-3 with a 6.13 ERA in nine starts, had surgery in July. He also received interest from the Phillies and Royals.
