TAMPA — The Tampa Bay Rays have signed veteran outfielder Hideki Matsui to a minor league contract, the team announced Monday.
Matsui, 37, will participate in extended spring training at the team’s facility in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Terms of Matsui’s deal have not been released.
The left-handed hitter played the first seven years of his career with the Yankees before playing a year each with the Angels and A’s. Matsui, a career .285 hitter with 173 home runs, saw a slip in production during his single season in Oakland, with a career-low .251 batting average.
The two-time MLB All-Star claimed World Series MVP honors during the Yankees’ title run in 2009 before spending one season with the Los Angeles Angels.
The Japanese slugger was a three-time MVP and nine-time All-Star in Japan, winning three Japan Series titles before joining the Yankees in 2003.
