Dillon Lawson is back in a familiar role, just with the Yankees’ rival organization.

The former Yankees hitting coach has been hired as the Red Sox’ hitting coordinator, as The Athletic first reported on Monday night.

Lawson, who will work mostly with the upper levels of the Red Sox’ minor league affiliates, previously spent three years as the Yankees’ minor league hitting coordinator before being promoted to major league hitting coach in 2022.

The Yankees then fired Lawson at the All-Star break in 2023 as their offense struggled mightily, with general manager Brian Cashman citing the need for a new voice.

But the Yankees have praised the work Lawson did for them on the player development side, even as things did not work out at the major league level.

“Dillon did a lot of good things,” Cashman said at the GM meetings last month. “He left a lot of good things behind that I want to acknowledge.”

Much of the Yankees’ minor league hitting staff are coaches that share Lawson’s data-driven approach.

The organization was recently ranked one of the game’s top-performing minor league systems from an offensive Statcast perspective by Baseball America, though translating that success to the major leagues has proven difficult.

“Dillon Lawson did a lot of great things for this franchise as he came up as our hitting coordinator,” Cashman said on the day Lawson was dismissed. “He was very dominant, especially in our player development field. … He worked his tail off and he cared and he wanted the outcomes that we all want.”
