Francisco Alvarez’s opportunity with the Mets has arrived.

The organization’s top prospect is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Syracuse before Friday’s home opener, after the team announced Thursday that Omar Narvaez will be placed on the injured list with a medium-to-high grade strain in his left calf, as revealed by imaging.

The typical timeline to resume playing, with that degree of strain to the calf according to the Mets, is eight to nine weeks.

Alvarez was notified on Wednesday that he was needed in New York in case Narvaez was headed to the IL.

Narvaez departed the Mets’ 8-7 loss to the Brewers in the ninth inning with discomfort.

It leaves the 21-year-old Alvarez in position to show he is ready, after a spring training in which team officials wanted him to focus on his work behind the plate.

Team brass will have to decide how much playing time to give Alvarez, with Tomas Nido also in the mix at catcher.

The Mets are sticking with their plan to start Nido in Friday’s home opener at Citi Field, with Alvarez available off the bench.

The Mets signed Narvaez in the offseason with the idea he could platoon with Nido, giving the team a lefty/righty bat combo behind the plate.

But Alvarez’s stock rose during a spring training in which he may have put receiving/defense ahead of his powerful right-handed bat.

“[Alvarez] came in ready to work, and I think he took a huge step forward on the catching side,” Nido told The Post after Alvarez was optioned to Triple-A near the end of spring training. “I think that was the goal in general was to make it known for him to take pride in the catching, and I think he did a great job.

“The little things they wanted him to work on, I think he did it. I am excited for him. I think it’s going to be a great year, and we’ll see how it develops.”

Alvarez was off to a strong start offensively for Syracuse with a 1.056 OPS and two homers in four games.

Narvaez joins a crowded injured list that includes Justin Verlander, Edwin Diaz, Jose Quintana and Tommy Hunter, among others.

Diaz is likely lost for the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in his right knee and Quintana will be sidelined at least into July after undergoing rib surgery.

Verlander is recovering from a teres major strain near his right armpit, and the most recent imaging showed decreased swelling, according to the Mets.

The veteran reliever Hunter was placed on the IL this week with back spasms.

After saying last year in spring training his goal was to play for the Mets in 2022, Alvarez split most of the season between Double-A Binghamton and Syracuse.

But his goal was attained in late September, when the Mets — in search of a jolt from the right side — called up Alvarez for the last week of the regular season.

Alvarez hit his first major league home run and was placed on the NL wild-card roster (he went 0-for-1 in the series against the Padres).

After the season Alvarez underwent surgery to remove a loose body from his right ankle.

Alvarez had been shut down for a stretch in August and September because of discomfort in the ankle. This spring he said the ankle was no longer an issue.
