Francisco Lindor is now in select Mets company — along with some guy who used to catch and wore No. 31.
With his seventh-inning sacrifice fly in the Mets’ 5-0 win over the Nationals to cap a perfect 6-0 homestand, the shortstop has driven in at least one run in a career-high 10 straight games. The only other Met to do so is Mike Piazza, who had one streak of 10 in a row in 1999 and another of 15 the following year.
“Whenever you get put in a category with Piazza, it’s special,” Lindor said.
He is just the seventh shortstop ever, and the first since Hanley Ramirez in 2009, to put together such a streak. He has 20 RBIs and is batting .365 (15-for-42) in that span, and 43 RBIs for the season.
“This is a team thing, this is not me,” Lindor said. “I get RBIs because I have guys in front of me who get on base. Credit goes to them. This is more of a team thing.”
Francisco Lindor hits a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning of the Mets’ 5-0 win over the Nationals. Robert SaboTylor Megill is getting closer to a rehabilitation assignment.
A day after the right-hander threw three innings in a simulated game, manager Buck Showalter said there was a slight possibility Megill would make a start for the Mets on the upcoming 10-game trip to Southern California.
Megill, out since May 12 due to biceps tendinitis, will throw a bullpen session Friday, then would likely start a game in the minor leagues a few days later. That would put him in line to return to the Mets for the tail end of the trip, against the Angels the weekend of June 10-12.
“He’s close to going on the mound and pitching in a game,” Showalter said. “I was surprised at how much velocity he was generating in a ‘sim’ game. Those things are usually hard to get your meter up.”
Tomas Nido notched a career-high four hits, and is the first Mets catcher with that many hits in a game since Wilson Ramos on Aug. 31, 2019. His three RBIs were one more than he amassed all of May.
Jacob deGrom, working his way back from a stress reaction in his right scapula, continued to throw on flat ground on Wednesday and will travel with the team on the upcoming road trip.
He may miss the first few games, however, because of a family matter, Showalter said.
James McCann (broken hamate bone) had his stitches removed on Tuesday. … Brandon Nimmo returned to the lineup after missing the past four games with a sprained right wrist. He went 0-for-5. … Jeff McNeil was given the day off.
