Philadelphia Phillies manager Gabe Kapler found himself embroiled in a heated argument Friday morning.
Angelo Cataldi, who hosts a morning show on SportsRadio 94WIP, invited the Phillies skipper to join his show, and the pair quickly disagreed over the nature of Andrew McCutchen’s season-ending injury.
Cataldi inquired about the play in Monday night’s game that led to McCutchen’s torn ACL, specifically about Jean Segura’s decision to not run hard out of the batter’s box.
With McCutchen on first, Segura hit a routine pop-up to Padres second baseman Ian Kinsler, who let the ball drop, with Segura’s failure to run to first base providing an opportunity to get a double play. After Kinsler threw to first to erase Segura, McCutchen found himself in a run-down, and he injured his knee as he tried to quickly change directions.
“I’m saying that’s not Segura’s fault and to say that is absolutely irresponsible,” Kapler said on the show.
After the veteran radio host claimed the “whole city” blames Segura for the injury, Kapler insisted Cataldi doesn’t “speak for the whole city.”
Cataldi stood his ground.
“I talk to a hell of a lot more fans than you do,” Cataldi said.
Before he departed, Kapler got in one final shot.
“I am very frustrated with you,” Kapler said. “Right now, I’m pretty perturbed. I think you didn’t handle this show in a fair and reasonable way, and that’s probably the thing I am most disappointed in, is the way you handled this show.”
