Game 42: Mets at Red Sox
BOSTON — Mike Pelfrey will find out if his emergency session with a sports shrink was a success tonight when he takes the mound at Fenway Park in the second game of this three-game interleague series with the Red Sox. Pelfrey sought out the psychologist after committing a club-record tying three balks last Sunday in a loss at San Francisco — his first loss of the season. Pelfrey attributed the balks to a case of the yips.
Pelfrey has never faced the Red Sox or any of their hitters but comes in on a bit of a roll, having allowed just seven earned runs in his past 20 innings. He also begins the night having won four of his first five decisions.
Pelfrey will square off against veteran Josh Beckett, who comes in with quality starts in each of his past three outings. Beckett hasn’t faced the Mets since 2006 but is a lifetime 6-1 with a 1.98 ERA against them after starting his career with the Marlins.
As for the lineup, Carlos Beltran‘s knee bruise is forcing him to occupy the DH role again tonight, meaning another start in center field for Jeremy Reed. Ryan Church also is unavailable (hamstring), so Angel Pagan will start in right.
Here is the 22-19 Mets’ order for the 7:10 game:
