Game 74: Yankees at Mets
(UPDATED 2.0) The Mets are hoping the reliable Livan Hernandez can finally stem the tide and salvage something out of this disastrous Subway Series tonight when he takes on the Yankees and Chien-Ming Wang at Citi Field. The injury-ravaged Mets have a total of four hits and one run in the first two games of this series, including Saturday night’s one-hit shutout at the hands of A.J. Burnett.
The Mets are counting on Hernandez to be the stopper, even though they have lost four of the right-hander’s past five starts. On the bright side, Hernandez has allowed just four earned runs in his past two outings, a span that covers 14 innings.
Unfortunately for the Mets, Hernandez doesn’t have an encouraging history against the Yankees. He is 0-3 with a 6.94 ERA in six career starts, including a no-decision at Yankee Stadium on June 12 in which he allowed three home runs.
Hernandez will face off against the badly struggling Wang, who is winless in 10 starts this season and spent time in Triple-A to strengthen weakness in his hip.
Here is the 37-36 Mets’ order for the 8:05 p.m. game on ESPN:
Daniel Murphy 1B
Alex Cora SS
David Wright 3B
Gary Sheffield RF
Fernando Tatis LF
