The Yankees appear to have avoided the worst with an injury to Gary Sanchez.

The catcher left Saturday’s game against the Rays after taking a foul tip to his exposed right hand in the fourth inning, but X-rays were negative, the team said. The Yankees termed him day-to-day with a contusion to his right index and middle fingers.

Sanchez had initially stayed in the game for the rest of the fourth inning and flew out to center field in the bottom half, but was replaced by Kyle Higashioka behind the plate to begin the top of the fifth. Earlier in the game, he had walked and scored the Yankees’ only run in the second inning.
