BALTIMORE — Greg Bird has a foot injury, and Gary Sanchez is headed to the 10-day DL after leaving Saturday’s game in Baltimore with a bicep injury. This isn’t how the Baby Bombers wanted to start 2017.
Sanchez took a big hack at a fifth-inning, 3-2 pitch he fouled off, and then appeared to hold his right arm/hand awkwardly. Michael Schuk, an assistant trainer, examined Sanchez’s arm on the field, and the catcher was diagnosed with a strained right bicep.
Sanchez, who swung into history in a torrid two-month start to his career last year, has been the team’s No. 2 hitter and great hope for the future. General manager Brian Cashman went to the locker room to check on Sanchez.
Sanchez was replaced by Austin Romine, who walked.
