Gary Sanchez made his Mets debut.

In a moment of déjà vu with a major twist, Sanchez was started behind the plate for the home team in a Sunday afternoon MLB game in New York.

Two days after he was called up from Triple-A by the Mets, the former Yankees slugger got the nod to catch Max Scherzer and bat eighth in the lineup for the first game of a doubleheader against the Guardians, going 1-for-3 with a sac fly in the Mets’ 5-4 comeback win.

“It feels good to be back here in New York after all those years,” Sánchez said through an interpreter before not playing in Friday’s series-opener. “It’s a different team, but it’s still the same city, so it’s exciting to be here.”

Sanchez was an All-Star in 2017 and 2019 but his career spiraled from there, leading to a trade to the Twins after the 2021 season.

He was released upon request from the Giants organization earlier this month without getting out of Triple-A.

His last MLB at-bat was on Oct. 5, 2022.

Rookie Francisco Alvarez has emerged as the Mets’ starting catcher with Omar Narvaez (strained calf) and Tomas Nido (dry eye syndrome) on the injured list.

But teams rarely use the same catcher in both ends of a doubleheader, which meant Saturday’s rainout essentially guaranteed that Sanchez would start one of Sunday’s games at Citi Field.

Mets manager Buck Showalter said “a lot of factors” went into determining which game Sanchez would start but declined to reveal any specifics.

“I don’t like Gary waiting around too long,” Showalter said. “You don’t want to get too far away from catching. Like I said, it would shake out. This is the way we are going to go today. We’ll see what the future holds.”

Scherzer and Sanchez did all the normal pregame planning to eliminate the need for too many mound visits, but Showalter was most interested in what happens “on the fly” when there is a deviation in the plan.

“A little different today because Gary hasn’t caught him,” Showalter said.

Scherzer pitched six shutout innings before the bullpen coughed up a three-run lead in the eighth.

Sanchez was a career .111 hitter with one home run and five RBI in 12 games at his new home ballpark entering Sunday.

But he was swinging a hot bat for the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, compiling a 1.014 OPS in 37 plate appearances since May 9.

“As long as I’m healthy,” Sanchez said, “I can do a lot of good things.”

Sanchez actually is getting a second chance to make a first impression on New York.
