Joe Girardi’s statement yesterday that the Yankees may go with a three-man rotation for the ALCS would make Chad Gaudin the odd man out of that mix.
The uncertainty of Gaudin’s situation is nothing new to the 26-year-old the Yankees acquired from the Padres in August. Gaudin made six starts with the Yankees, but also made five relief appearances.
“It’s been like that the whole time,” Gaudin said. “I’ve got to approach it to be ready on Friday and I will prepare myself.”
Girardi said today that there are a couple of factors that could push the team back to the three-man rotation. If CC Sabathia’s pitch count sky rockets in his Game 1 start or the more likely scenario that either Friday’s or Saturday’s game gets rained out cancelling the off-day on Sunday.
Gaudin said he would be ready either way.
“I don’t approach pitching as a starter or reliever,” Gaudin said. “I approach to try and get outs. If it just so happens to be seven innings or two innings. It’s a mindset of getting outs not whether I will start or relieve.”
