TAMPA — For a second straight spring, Gerrit Cole will detour to Los Angeles with an elbow that hangs in the balance.

The Yankees ace will get an in-person visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in California on Monday, sources said, to determine whether his prized right elbow will require Tommy John surgery.

Cole took the same trip to the prominent surgeon last March, when he breathed a sigh of relief in receiving a diagnosis of elbow nerve inflammation and edema that called for rest.

There is even more concern this year, with surgery a distinct possibility, after Cole lasted just two Grapefruit League starts before the same elbow grew “alarming,” Cole said.

The righty was knocked around in an outing Thursday, felt his elbow grow progressively sore and knew “something wasn’t right.”
