DETROIT — The Yankees won’t have a playoff chase to make in September, but they can at least help bolster Gerrit Cole’s Cy Young bid.
That train continued to roll along Wednesday night at Comerica Park, where Cole — even without his most dominant stuff — tossed six solid innings and got plenty of support in a 6-2 win over the Tigers.
Gleyber Torres homered for a third straight game, one of three home runs the Yankees hit as they clinched their first series victory in 11 tries — their last one coming when they swept the Royals on July 21-23. If only the Yankees played in the AL Central.
While the series-clinching victory came too late to make much of a difference, the Yankees (65-68) at least got Cole another win as he tries to capture his first career Cy Young award.
“I think the guy’s on a Hall of Fame track,” manager Aaron Boone said before the game. “Certainly adding something like that [a Cy Young] would be an awesome boost to the résumé and meaningful to not only him but all of his teammates as well.”
Gerrit Cole, who picked up his 12th win, strengthened his Cy Young case by holding the Tigers to two runs in the Yankees’ 6-2 win. APCole, whose offense and/or bullpen has cost him a handful of wins this season, improved to 12-4 and kept his ERA right at 2.95.
He gave up a pair of solo home runs to Jake Rogers and Spencer Torkelson, but otherwise faced little resistance while striking out seven.
The Yankees ace has now allowed two runs or fewer in 21 of his 28 starts this season, the most in the majors.

Sometimes there’s gonna be some challenges, both from the opposition and inside yourself. So it’s about overcoming those and trying to replicate the same results every time.”
The Yankees will go for the four-game sweep of the Tigers (59-74) on Thursday afternoon before heading to Houston, where they will be joined by top prospects Jasson Dominguez and Austin Wells.

On a night when DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton also homered, Torres went 2-for-4 with a home run, double and walk. He has been especially strong in August, batting .340 with seven home runs and a 1.045 OPS.

It’s been cool to watch him progress that last couple years and get back to the level of production I think he holds himself to.
“Personally I’d like to see him continue to take another step forward. There’s a lot in there. Really special player, great hand-eye coordination, fun guy to be around. He’s got a lot of baseball in front of him. Love to see him keep getting better.”
