Giancarlo Stanton and the Marlins are deep in negotiations on a contract that would pay the slugger $325 million over 13 years.
The contract will include a no-trade clause and an opt-out provision.
The strong sentiment among executives at the General Managers’ meetings this week was there was momentum cresting toward a deal.
Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com was the first to report the sides were discussing a deal in the 12-year, $320 million area for the right fielder.
The current record for the most money guaranteed a player is the $292 million over 10 years Miguel Cabrera received last year from the Tigers.
Stanton, 25, is coming off a season in which he posted 37 homers, 105 RBIs and a .950 OPS to finish second in National League MVP voting.
Stanton’s season came to an abrupt end on Sept. 11 after he was hit in the face by a fastball from Brewers hurler Mike Fiers. The Marlins superstar suffered facial fractures, facial lacerations that required stitches and dental damage.
